The last goodbye is always the saddest

The city laid beneath them, a large city, noisy, crowded and sad, as every big city. They where over a very old bridge, made by human hands, in an almost forgotten time. The sun was over the horizon and the afternoon was dying, the memory of a long rain left a soft smell of wet dirt, nicer than the usual smell of oil and smoke. The sun was giving away his last rays of light, and as the shadows grew larger, so did the sadness in the hearts standing over the old roman aqueduct.

Two hearts, perhaps the last real human hearts in the big city, ruled by feelingless, ageless machines. They where the last human hearts in the large city, and the only hearts in love in many large cities. Yes, young, innocent, true love, the only kind of love crazy enough to survive in a world like that. And this was the farewell.

The wind blew, the long hair moved along, and the long coat of the other one moved heavily as well. The boy with the long hair was looking the other heart in front with begging sad eyes. The one the other one was looking downwards, to the emptiness. The longhaired boy was trying to convince himself this was the best way, pushing his tears back to his eyes, he was not convinced to be the best way, but he knew it was the only one.

The heart with a long coat and dark eyes turned, face to face, their sights meet and each one understood why they where there. With one look in the longhaired boy’s eyes he knew what would happen if they said goodbye. But it was the best way, only way. He knew what would happen and what he needed to do.

Goodbyes are always sad, and they are sadder when they are meant to last forever. They are hard and that is why humans used to think they where for a short time, and that after this life, eternity was waiting for them, to be spent with their beloved ones. But that was a long time ago, when there where humans and when there was a god. Not now. Not today. The last goodbye is always the saddest of all.

-       Well, I guess this is it, is late you should be going… - the longhaired one said
-       There is time, don’t worry - he answered
-       Will you return soon?
-       You already know the answer to that question
-       Will you ever return?

He stayed in silence, and turned back his look to the city beneath them.

-       I also know that answer – said the longhaired one and tried to search what was he searching in the big city.
-       I’m sorry that you need to get through this, you don’t deserve it, you shouldn’t have to suffer because of me… I don’t deserve this
-       Don’t say that, if I do this is because I love you, is that too hard to understand for you?
The boy with a long cape kept silence
-       yes it is – he answered.
-       I love you – the longhaired said, the other one smiled.

It’s time - the boy with the long cape and dark sad eyes said and started walking to the beginning of the aqueduct,

-Don’t go! - The other one shouted, he stopped and turned around, he walked back and hugged him, with his arms and his cape, he said to his ear – everything will be all right-.

They stood over an old aqueduct in an old city in a long hug until the tears of the longhaired one stopped falling. They split apart, they forced a smile and the longhaired one tried to console himself with the idea of crossing the space to finding him, wherever he was, they will meet each other again. The longcoated one finally accepted what he needed to do so that the boy he loved the most would not suffer.

-I hope our paths will meet again some time in the future... - he said with a melancholic smile

- No, they won't- and shoot him in the head.
